So Who Is BoomerWarrior?
My name is Roland (Rolly) Montpellier. I was born in 1947 of very young parents and grew up on a farm along with 8 more siblings who followed me. Yep, I’m the eldest of a large family. As the eldest, I was often reminded that I had to show the way, help out and be an example for those who followed. Even then, I had followers.
I recall a busy childhood and teenage years working on the farm but playing hard when it was time.
After High School, I completed my university studies in geography, urban planning and political science. I was an “A” student which is code talk for ‘nerd’ or ‘bookworm’. Rich with geography knowledge, there was a time when I could name the capital city of every nation on earth. Quite an accomplishment don’t you think? You can imagine how popular that made me. I was a big hit at every party.
Fast forward to my early twenties. I joined the Public Service (which sounds a lot better than saying I became a ‘civil servant’) and worked in public administration my entire career – several great jobs including senior executive management positions. After a first retirement, I became a consultant from which I retired a second time. In my case, retirement struck twice.
I’m now a recovering bureaucrat, less concerned about being diplomatic, structured and observing administrative protocol. In other words, I am free at last.

I’ve been active in politics since the sixties and I’m sure I’ve supported every party in the political spectrum in Canada including the Green Party. In 2007, I was a candidate for the Green Party in the Ontario elections. I lost but discovered that being a loser wasn’t so bad. In fact, there were many more losers than winners. Some of them actually got elected.
With retirement came a period of introspection, self-evaluation and questioning. What do I want to do with the rest of my life? What does it all mean? How much time do I have? How can I get involved? There is to much to do. Where do I start?
I wasn’t always this way. Like most people, any un-ease about society, the environment or the body politic was quickly tossed aside or squeezed out by an overly-busy lifestyle. I had a career to pursue, kids to put through school, a mortgage to pay and a retirement to save for. Deep down inside however, a small nagging voice kept reminding me that someday I would have to get back to the issues left unresolved. No, I do not really hear voices, well not that often.
And there would be no bigger issue, no more daunting challenge – the mother-ship issue of our times – than the degradation of our environment and climate change. I’m not sure precisely when I knew that we are destroying our planet. But I recognize exactly when I knew that I had to do something about it.
When my grandchildren were born, I knew.
