I met Ellen in Chicago in August of 2013. We were among some 1,500 participants attending the Climate Reality Project leadership training provided by Al Gore. As Climate Leaders, Ellen and I, and thousands of others around the world, now follow our respective path in the business of climate activism.
In April 2014, I received a complimentary copy of Earth Calling from Ellen. This book is truly a precious gift which has helped me understand why I’ve answered the call to act on climate. The answer to that question is simple. “It’s not okay to do nothing when you know something should be done.” Now I know.
Earth Calling is “an eloquent plea to wake up to what we as humans are doing – and failing to do – for our land, air and water.” ~ Peter Davis, director of Hearts and Minds documentary. (Editor~Rolly Montpellier-BoomerWarrior)
Action springs not from thought,
but from a readiness for responsibility.
On some level, we know what we are being called to do. Each of us has a mystical fingerprint that identifies our life’s calling and an inner music whole pull we cannot resist. That mystical fingerprint is unique and powerful. It beckons in a way that may be soft but is always undeniable. If we would listen – and look around – we’d find ourselves surrounded by others on the same journey of discovery, breathing together with us. The reason is simple – because, like you, as they looked around their lives and saw a need – they couldn’t not act.
Knowing isn’t enough; neither is being willing.
We must do.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
What Moves You?
Like a fingerprint, your earth calling is unique. Wherever you live and whatever your age, you were born for these times, and you are not traveling alone. And you have so many choices and entry points, the first dilemma is an easy one: just pick something and start. Everything you do will inform you about where you go next. The operative word is do. Act. Stretch yourself. Learn. Move. Get involved.
The universe abhors a vacuum and loves action. As Goethe said, it’s great to know, to have the data and even wisdom at hand, its’ also great to have a willing heart, but what ignites change is action. Action is any movement’s oxygen and lifeblood.
So begin with a single question: What moves you? What makes your heart pound? What can you simply not look away from? What are you willing to risk?
Some people like to march, others like to write letters to the editor or wield power as armchair activists with online networks. Others are “boots on the ground” networkers who are more comfortable making speeches, rallying people, negotiating with municipal authorities, mediating disagreements, or just keeping the pizza coming at planning meetings.
What Are You Good At?
Are you a networker, a nurturer, a born leader, a visionary? Are you politically or socially connected or know people who are? Are you good at raising funds, compiling data, writing press releases, answering phones, assembling meals, handling statistics, hosting meet-ups, making signs, training others? Are you good at photography or shooting short videos and popping them up on social media sites?
Make an honest assessment of what you have experience doing, are willing to do, or just wnat to learn. Then jump in. You’ll find your place. There are thousands of nonprofits, NGOs, and green organizations that need dependable volunteers to handle the bulk of the day-to-day management of the business of climate activism.
As you serve, you will be served right back by a growing understanding of where you fit, so give it time and use your awakened senses for guidance. It will come. Everyone alive has a place at this table
Let yourself be silently drawn
by the stronger pull of what you really love.
Earth is Calling you. How will you answer?
