The Polar Vortex in Two Minutes
You no doubt have been hearing that the recent cold spell in the United States and Canada disproves global warming. Skeptics, climate deniers and the conservative anti-climate change media have been all over this event in their attempt to score points with an already bewildered public. As the debate about climate change rages on, a new term has been added to the dialogue – the polar vortex.
Dr. John Holdren (President Obama’ s Science Advisor) explains the Polar Vortex in the two minute video that follows. Dr. Holdren says “ I don’t believe it. The fact is that no single weather episode can either prove or disprove climate change.” He believes that “the odds are that we can expect….to see more of this pattern of extreme cold in the mid-latitudes and some extreme warm in the far north.”

Excerpts from the Polar Vortex Explained in 2 Minutes video:
Climate is the pattern of weather that we observe geographically and over the seasons, and it’s described in terms of averages, variations and probabilities.
…a pattern that we can expect to see with increasing frequency as global warming continues.
…the temperature difference between the Arctic and the mid-latitudes is shrinking, and that temperature difference is what drives what is called the circumpolar Vortex – the great counterclockwise swirling mass of cold air that hovers over the Arctic.
As the temperature difference between the Arctic and the mid-latitudes declines, the Polar Vortex becomes weaker and wavier. The waviness means…larger excursions of cold air southward…. and relatively warmer mid-latitude air into the far north.
Scientists and climatologists have shown how the weakening Jet Streams are linked to global warming and the extreme weather events in North America – the recent cold snap, hurricane Sandy, the Colorado and Alberta floods. President Obama’s Plan to Fight Climate Change makes the unquestionable link between climate change and extreme weather. “2012 was the second most extreme year on record for the Nation.”
