Alternatives to the Black Friday Frenzy
I’m pleased to feature Annie Leonard’s (Story of Stuff) plea for alternatives to the Black Friday Frenzy, which traditionally marks the beginning of the American Christmas shopping season. (Editor-BoomerWarrior)
Each year, hundreds of thousands of Americans gather together in a pre-dawn chill the day after Thanksgiving for a time-honored tradition: beating the heck out of each other to be the first through the door to grab some cheap Stuff.
Last year, a shopper at a Los Angeles-area Walmart even unleashed pepper spray on her fellow shoppers to gain an advantage. Sick, right?

This You Tube reminds me of the haughty and greedy character in “It’s A Wonderful Life” sitting in his leather reclining chair, smoking his cigar, sneering at the villagers of his town and plotting to put the smaller business man out of business…while the rest of the home owners and families go down the drink into dissipation and degeneration.
It’s definitely a video about excesses and abuse. This is about American gone wrong.

Thank you for your comment. It’s all about our addiction to consumerism.
What about us just being GENUINELY THANKFUL that we have so much – simple things like a roof over our heads, food to eat each day, a few coins in our pocket, that we can go out of our homes without fear of being bombed or killed in some other senseless way? How about focusing on the needs of our immediate neighbors, those who have less, those who ARE hungry for whatever reason without judging them, those mothers struggling to raise their children alone…. how about giving LOCALLY. If many of us did this instead of buying gifts for those we love, gifts they don’t need & often don’t even want – what then?
Great comment. You have the right attitude about being thankful. I find the shopping frenzies every time a new store opens up or Boxing Day sales totally ridiculous – we are addicted to consumerism.
Thanks again – sorry I’m late responding.
